The BD550 is an entry level LG player that offers quite a bit. It plays back DVD & Blu Ray just fine. For extras I was primarily interested in accessing my Netflix account so I could stream movies, and the service works great with the BD550. So far I have no complaints and am pleased with the purchase.
We recently bought a new LG TV for our finished basement because LG makes great stuff. I wanted a LG Blu Ray player so we could make things easier with the remotes. We have one remote upstairs for our Sony TV, Sony Blu Ray, and Sony sterio and I liked being able to only use one remote. The remote idea works great with the LGs we bought. The problem lies in the firmware for the Blu Ray. Almost right away we noticed movies freezing for a second or two but it was very infrequent. I would clean the disk and it seemed to worked. However, as we buy newer movies and watch them fresh out of the box it was happening more and more until it got to the point where it was too annoying to watch the movie. Luckily the last one we bouht, Prince of Persia, was also a DVD combo. We put the DVD in and had no problems. In fact, we have never had a problem watching a regular DVD.
Anyway, I contacted cutstomer support about this and after 2 days of dealing with them they told me it was a firmware issue and they were working on a update to fix problems like that. They even listed a few movies in which Prince of Persia was one where they were specifically trying to update for. This may be true and I will update to the most current version they have and wait for the next one before I call this player complete crap. I have played all the movies that have given me trouble in my Sony player, which is a year and a half older and has never had the firmware updated, and have not had any problems. I will not be buying another LG blu ray player.
Besides that, the picture is great. The sound is great. It’s easy to use and easy to install. If only it would play my Blu Ray disks as well as my DVDs. I really hope the firmware update works because this could be a decent player for the money.
This nicely priced Blu-Ray player is worth every penny. Very inexpensive and does everything. Awesome picture, but has no built in wifi (if you need it and your tv doesn’t have wifi get the bd570). I have it paired with a 55LE5500. TOTALLY satisfied
The download of latest software for BD 550 when connecting to Internet did take quite a while for once. My internet connection is around 2.5 MPS although it isn’t slow bandwidth. Overall, the Disc Player is working as expected in all provided functionality including Netflix and YouTube. There is no issue while playing Netflix with my U-verse internet connection. The player itself doesn’t display the song title but to the TV screen while playing CD music. I thought it will display in the BD550 player window as well, and it isn’t the case. I have to turn on TV in order to see the song title and which sound track it is on. I actually haven’t tried Blu-Ray but standard DVD, the picture and sound quality is fine to me. I prefer with wired internet connection to wireless. This player isn’t come with wireless so it isn’t a big deal to me because this model is lower price than that with wireless.
The LG BD 550 is a solid player, especially for the price, but there’s a major design flaw when installing it and setting it up. A lot of Blu-Rays are encoded with DTS-HD Master Audio, but by default, the player outputs audio at a different setting – PCM 2 channel. In order to get the DTS-HD Master Audio, you have to change the setting to Primary Pass-Through. However, even if you have a receiver/amplifier capable of DTS-HD Master Audio, the player can’t even play back the audio for a lot of discs.
After a lot of research, I realized this was a common flaw for several different players and receivers (I have a Denon AVR 590), and I had to change the player’s audio setting to PCM multichannel. Apparently, that setting gives you the most raw audio that’s recorded on the disc, and then your receiver can decode it from there. After testing many discs, I was very happy with the audio, so I decided to keep the player. What a headache, though.
As for the video quality for both Blu-Ray discs and older DVDs, I’m impressed with this player. I also like the interface of the main menu, which can be a little sluggish, but still beats the unintuitive menus of Sony or Panasonic players I’ve tried. It’s not the fastest player, but at this price, it does the job. I haven’t had a chance to try the network features of the player.
